Last Minute Super Easy Baby Costume!!!!!

Truth be told, I didn't make this costume last minute, but it did only take me a matter of an hour.  I decided my little Jack was going to be Elmo as soon as Finn decided she was going to be Abby Cadabby.  I figured I'd get away with dressing them in matching costumes as long as I can while they are little.  You could easily throw this together tonight or tomorrow for your little one to enjoy.

Materials:
A red sweat suit
3 Foam balls (they come in packages of 6 or 8 at Micheal's, it's great to have extra just in case).
A black Sharpie
Orange paint
Fashion tape
Scissors
Something round to trace the eyes onto the balls.  (I just used a paint cap)

1. Use the Sharpie to trace the pupils of the eyes onto the balls, then fill them in.  You might have to go over them a couple of times.

2. Paint the third ball orange.  (I didn't take a photo of this, I trust you got the idea)

3. Place the sweatshirt hood onto something that resembles your child's head.  I returned to my dodge ball I used for the Abby wig.  Then I started judging the placement for the balls.

4.  Cut several pieces of fashion tape in half.  I recommend using at least 2 pieces per ball, that way they will really stick on there well.  If you don't want or need to use the hoodie again, you can hot glue them on.

5.  Look at that!!! Done already!!!  When Halloween is over just pop the eyes and nose off, peel off the tape and you have a great little red sweat suit for your little one.

I'll post some pics of the kiddies all dressed up and ready to go tomorrow night!!!!!

3rd and Final Abby Cadabby Tutorial: The Wand

Finally onto the last part of this costume that my 3 year old is totally psyched over.  Today we are making the all important magic wand.

Materials:
Wooden Dowel
Paint
Glitter
Spray
Yarn
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun

1.  First, I made the Pom Pom for the top of the wand.  Remember the poofs I made for the wig?  I made the pom pom for the wand the exact same way.  I took a small piece of cardboard and wrapped around a whole bunch of yarn. Then I cut 1 small individual piece of yarn to tie around the  pom pom when I carefully slipped it off the card board.

2.  Once I tied the individual piece of yarn around the bunch of yarn,  I cut both ends.

3.  Once that was finished it was off to the basement to make this wand sparkle, because any good fairy in the Flying Fairy School will tell you that your wand has to sparkle.  I broke out the Krylon glitter spray and gave the pom pom a good spray.

4.  While that dried it was time to paint the stick. We went with purple because that is Finn's favorite color (today anyway).

5.  When both the stick and pom pom were dry we finally just hot glued the pom pom to the top of the stick.

6.  Now lets go make some magic!!!!  I'm a little worried.  Finn says she want to turn me into a frog...

Abby Cadabby Part 2: The Wig

I’ve been continuing to work on my daughter’s Abby Cadabby Halloween costume in every spare second I get.  After the tutu, I began working on the wig.

Materials:

Yarn

Tights

Hot Glue Gun

Fabric Glue

Card board

Sewing Machine

Ball (approximately the size of your kids head)

Plastic bag

  1. I started by sticking the tights on my daughter’s head.  I held up the leg potion of them and pulled them off.  I immediately cut where I had had my hand.

     What a Ham Bone!!!!

2.     I took it what I cut over to the sewing machine and sewed the top where I cut closed, so it looks like a little beanie.

3.      Next, I grabbed the yarn and measured earlobe to earlobe over the top of Finn’s head.  Then I cut that piece of yarn.

4.     I took the piece of yarn that I cut and measured up against an old diaper box.  I cut a piece of cardboard from the box to match the length of the yarn.

5.   I took my ball of yarn and wrapped and wrapped it around the cardboard. When I was sure I had enough I cut both ends so all the pieces would be the same length.

6.      I wrapped and wrapped more yarn around the shorter length of the card board for Abby’s bangs.  I made sure that they were longer so I could just trim them back later.

7.     I finally wrapped 2 more piles around the shorter end of the cardboard for Abby’s pigtails, that I will make from large yarn poofs later.

8.     When I was done with all the cutting, it was time to get my good old dodge ball out and pretend it was Finn’s head.  I first wrapped a plastic bag around it so that the wig would not get glued to the ball.  Then, I put the beanie cap on it.  I measure a length of felt that matched the yard from the front to the back of the beanie.

9.      I placed the piece of felt on the table and started gluing the center of the length of yarn onto the felt using my fabric glue.

10.      I then measured a piece of felt onto the beanie for Abby’s bangs and glued the ends of the yarn for the bangs onto that piece.

11.      After waiting for the glue to dry, I wanted to make a part in the wig, so I went back to the sewing machine and sewed a zig zag stitched seam down the middle of the wig.

12. Next, I took the felt strips with the bangs and hot glued it to the wig.

13.      Then I took the rest of the wig and hot glued it on to the beanie.  I took all the strands of yarn and glued them in place to make it look like pigtails.

14.  Letting that all dry I began on work on the poofs.  I had wrapped them around the cardboard and then slid them off carefully.  I laid them both down and tired a piece of yarn tightly in the middle of them.  Then, I cut the end making 2 poofballs.

15.      I took the poof balls and glued them to the top of the wig and VOLIA!!!!  The Abby Cadabby Wig is done.

Abby Cadabby Costume Part 1: The Tutu

After months and months of wanting to be a dinosaur for Halloween, my three-year old changed her mind and decided to be Sesame Street’s favorite fairy, Abby Cadabby.  Randomly, Abby’s Flying Fairy School has become her favorite television show. Knowing how educational Sesame Street is, I can’t say no. When she made the costume request I figured I could really work with this…my little one can be Elmo and we’ll have a Sesame Halloween. Who doesn’t love a theme?

The first part of the costume I made was the tutu.  It was really easy, and only took a small amount of time.

Materials

A few colors of glimmering rolls of tulle (I got mine off Amazon for about 3.99 each)

A crochet Headband (Mine was a pack from a wonderful establishment known as The Dollar Store)

Scissors

Instructions

First, I took the headband and slipped it around Finn’s waist.  I measured the tulle from her waist where the headband was to the middle of her calf, where I wanted the tutu to lay.  Next, I doubled the length of the tulle that I measured so I could eventually fold it in half lengthwise and loop it thought the headband. Measurements done, it was time to start cutting.

Once I had all the strips cut, I laid them out in the order of the pattern of colors I wanted to make the tutu.

Then I started attaching them.  For a no sew option, just fold individual strips in half lengthwise. Take the folded and push it through a piece of the bottom of the crochet headband. Loop the bottom through and pulled it tight. Do this (in the color pattern you like) around the entire bottom of the headband.

Once I finished the bottom, I went up to the center of the headband and made another row of tulle around the headband. I spaced the strips a little further apart then the bottom row to make the tutu nice and full.

Ta-da!!!  Done!!!  I now have a very happy little fairy!!!
